What’s the point of prayer walks on campus?

As the book Campus Prayer Walks puts it, “Prayer walking involves taking our prayers to the very places where we desire to see God’s presence manifested and our prayers answered… We [can] prayer walk throughout the community of people with prayers of blessing. We can pray blessings of peace upon families, dorms, classrooms, etc. We can pray prayers that welcome Jesus to our campus in all His love, forgiveness, healing and cleansing. We can pray that God would be honored, adored, lifted up, revealed and praised by name among the people of the community.”

Preparation

Before you go, choose a route around the campus that will take the amount of time you have available for this prayer walk. You can plan to walk in pairs and pray as you go, or to stop in specific spots to pray as a group, or a combination of the two.

Instructions

As you go, observe the people and places around you. Pray for what comes to mind as you go. Trust the Spirit to use the sights and sounds around you to bring prayers to mind. Whatever is prompted in your mind as you walk and observe can be something to pray for.

You can pray for the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs you see around you; for God to work in different academic areas; against the forces of evil that are at work on your campus; praising God for his goodness as you are reminded of it; and so on.

Debrief

Choose one of the following questions to discuss:

  • What did you notice? What stood out to you?

  • Describe what you felt while praying around campus.

  • What did you learn about God, yourself, or others through this experience?
