Pair up for two 3-min conversations. Take turns, where one person is the speaker and the other is a listener.
The listener can ask one of the following questions, or they can ask their own question:
How has the day been for you so far?
What’s something you’re enjoying this semester?
How do you feel about your major right now?
At the end of the 3 minutes, answer the following questions:
Listener: Based on the conversation you just had, what might be a few things that the speaker values?
Speaker: Is the listener correct?
Then switch roles and repeat.
If desired, have the group discuss:
Did you find yourself listening differently in this exercise than you normally would? If so, how?
How could listening for the values under the surface be meaningful in your everyday conversations?
