Why the “S” in PULSE stands for SERVE

When we serve others, we are telling a story. We are demonstrating with our actions that we believe in a God who loves his people. . We want to be people who go towards others in love. When we do so, we are not only part of telling others a story but we tell ourselves a story too. We are reminding ourselves that we’re created to care for others, that people are valuable, and that there is enough time and resources to go around.

In our culture, connection and community show up as two of the biggest felt needs for so many. Specific ways of serving others within this cultural context include things like acts of hospitality, welcome, and taking initiative in relationships, which can meet the needs of our peers in real, tangible ways. Being someone who creates spaces for people to be known, and who takes the initiative to move towards others, is a way we can serve the needs of our world as it is right now.

Serving in Scripture

In the Old Testament, God commands his people, Israel, to love others and do good in the world. When Jesus came, he came as a servant. He demonstrates this through his whole life, and particularly his death on our behalf. Jesus’ death is the ultimate act of service to the needy. He calls us to live in this same way. He invites us to be part of his mission in the world by laying down our lives for others, alongside Jesus, for his glory.
