Serving Spiritual Needs

People have many needs, some of which they are aware of, and some of which they’re not. As Christians, we know that their greatest need is actually spiritual: to know Jesus and experience life in him. One way we can serve our friends is by recognizing where they are in their spiritual journey and trying to help them see their need for Jesus.

The Journey Model

A tool that can be really helpful as we seek to meet our friends’ spiritual needs is called the Journey model, or the Five Thresholds. Developed by InterVarsity, it helps break the spiritual journey into recognizable stages with specific ways of helping friends in each stage.

  • Read or watch an overview of the Journey model.

  • Read this chart about how to be a good friend at each stage.

Discussion Questions

  • Think about one of your non-Christian friends. Can you identify where they are using the journey model?

  • What is one thing you could try to do with your friend this week to serve their spiritual needs – one thing you could do to meet them where they are on their journey?

Have one person pray for you all as you go into the week seeking to serve your friends’ spiritual needs.
